We have this common notion that criminals, or those people who are committing crimes, are a product of their upbringing. They were not taught properly in their early years, by their parents or guardian, what is right and wrong. In some cases, this concept is true. Studies showed that those criminals were once juveniles too. This just proved that juvenile delinquency, if not addressed early, could lead to serious problems. Juvenile rehabilitation is the answer to this problem. Often, this is viewed as a child’s prison. However, this is not at all true. Juvenile rehabilitation aims to correct their “misdemeanor” tendencies so that they may not be threats to the society. This does not mean locking up these young offenders in cages till they grow halos on their heads, but they are taught to participate in different personality improvement schemes, and other worth while programs. There are several juvenile rehabilitation programs that solicit the participation of the child’s parents in the different programs. This is important because instilling of moral values should basically come from the home. The presence of the parents in the programs would also make it easier for the child to go back to the community as an honest and responsible individual. Juvenile rehabilitation does not follow a strict list of rules or methods. It is said to be “an art and not a science”. This means that every juvenile offender is different from another. They have needs that are as varied as their reasons for misbehaving. This means that what works for one, may not work for the rest of the of kids in incarceration. Juvenile rehabilitation can be likened to shooting hoops. The more shots you take, the more chances you have of getting the ball inside the hoop. Most of the juveniles that are in incarceration said that the reason for their acts was because they do not feel that they belong, or that they feel that they do not matter to anybody, unless they are a part of something big. This is why experts believe that the sooner you reach out to the child, the better it is for him. Juvenile rehabilitation should not concentrate on appropriating a budget for incarceration. Instead, it should allocate half of the budget for alternative programs and activities that these kids can indulge in. Through this, there wouldn’t be as many youths as there are now, who need juvenile rehabilitation. Juvenile rehabilitation believes that an effective transformation of offenders is to start rehabilitating them early on. If you have reached out to a child in his early years, there is a greater chance that he will not do wrong again. In this way, juvenile cases will reduced, as well as adult criminals. Children are the hope of our future, thus they should be taught what is wrong and right. Parents play a vital role in molding a child into a productive citizen. According to a bible passage “train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. Juvenile rehabilitation is a great help towards helping those children have a good future.
Summary: Juvenile rehabilitation decreases the insurgence of juvenile offenders, as well as adult criminals. |
