Do you know someone who is paralyzed due to a stroke? This is the bad effect of this disease. Although it doesn’t kill all the time, stroke leaves a person disabled, stealing from him the ability to do normal activities. Stroke is said to be the number one killer in the world, particularly in the USA. And with the ever-increasing number of stroke patients, stroke rehabilitation is needed to restore their normal body functions. There are a lot of effects of stroke, these are: weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, affecting the whole side, or a part of it; speech and language problem; balance and coordination problems; trouble swallowing; memory, thinking, and learning problems; bowel and bladder control problems; poor vision; numbness; and fatigue. Stroke rehabilitation is a crucial component in a patient’s recovery program. It aims to restore as many as possible of the body functions that the patient had before the stroke. Stroke rehabilitation may make the patient move, talk, think, and be like his old self again. It also brings back the confidence to a person, so that he may be able to live his life as best as he can. If you suffered from stroke, it is best to consult your doctor for the stroke rehabilitation that you will need, or to see if you need one. Not all strokes require rehabilitation, if they don’t cause any damage to the person. Also, there are different stroke rehabilitation programs for different people, depending on the extent of the stroke. These programs, and their success, depend largely on the severity of the stroke experienced by the patient. Some other factors that can influence the efficiency of the stroke rehabilitation programs are the extent of the damage to the brain; skills of the stroke rehabilitation people; care of friends and families; and how soon stroke rehabilitation has been implemented. Stroke rehabilitation has several programs which include hospital programs, stroke rehabilitation facilities with nursing care, outpatient programs, and home-based programs. The stroke rehabilitation team also involves a lot of health care providers like physiatrists, rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, and social workers. Stroke rehabilitation offers more than restoration of physical functions. It also involves counseling the patients and their loved ones on several emotional issues regarding stroke. It does not mean that you will be completely safe from having another stroke in the future. In fact, you are more prone to having another one in the first year following the first stroke. There are a lot of things you can do to reduce your risks. Regular check ups should be done to avoid having another attack. Don’t let stroke disable you and affect your everyday life. Get a stroke rehabilitation program and work through it to restore your normal body functions. Depending on the severity of the damage, there is still a possibility that you can live a normal life after suffering from a stroke. Stroke rehabilitation is the way to do it. |
